Held by Light

My favorite time is just before dawn when the sky moves from black to denim colored and I can barely see the faintest promise of sunrise.

One day this week, as I walked at that time, the moon was still out as well. Full, bright yellow, with an added hazy golden ring around it; breathtaking. As I walked, I was mulling over the Jesus Calling devotional words and scriptures for the day, preparing in my mind for our weekly Jesus Calling Prayer Call.

The day’s reading described a long journey. The words endure and savor stood out to me. The devotional seemed timely, there’s no argument that we are all on a journey we did not ask for. When the Covid-19 crisis hit in March, life screeched to a weird halt and just about everything we knew for sure and took for granted was bagged up and taken to the curb. What has ensued has been unreal–our worry for our health and others, the loss of “normal” work, travel, gathering as we like, economic implications and more. Everything has become harder. The news and science, evolving, but confusing. The politics and division, unreal and painful.

I can handle a journey if I know where we are going and when we will get there. No one seems able to provide this information. The Jesus Calling devotional I’d read that day instructed me to walk in step with God and to savor the pleasures and endure the difficulties. Don’t worry what is around the next bend. Just concentrate on enjoying My presence and staying in step with me. (Jesus Calling, August 4 entry). Savor and endure while on this journey. Don’t even think about what is next or where it will end.

Incredibly, as I mulled it all over, walking my normal early morning route, I noticed I was suddenly living those words–on one side of me the bright, gold, ringed moon and on the other the pink, coral, golden rays of sunrise. God saying, I had you yesterday and I have you today. You are held here, in my my light. Just walk. It was a living devotional, a Holy moment.

I do not know what to say about the times we are living in. I truly don’t. I don’t know when or if it will ever be normal again. I do believe it is a perfect time to live our faith and to savor the signs and the good things God shows us. Endure the difficulties. Just walk and be held in God’s Light.

  1. Thanks, Cindy, for another timely message just when I needed it. You are a blessing to all of us during these difficult days.

  2. Cindy,

I talked on the phone to J’Lyn Monday, and I told her I have been praying for Robin. I know he is stressed beyond measure right now. I asked her to pray for my son, who is CEO of OU Medical Center—another stressful job. I appreciate your devotionals and your great ministry. .

    Love and prayers, Carlene
